Just want to ask how crowded is the stage door? And does every cast member stage doors? I'm seeing it in September can't wait. By far the best version of the play. they all have assumed their roles amazingly and it all fits together perfectly. i this play is breath-taking and a tear jerker, but believe me, its worth it to watch the whole thing. Do your research before going, especially when youre reviewing, because this review is pathetic. This was always advertised as a concert, because Queens theatre is being refurbished and changed to accommodate the tour version, as opposed to the original production. Therefore, you being disappointed in the lack of physical acting/light effects is your own fault for not realising what you were going to see. The purpose of the concert is to showcase the voices and the orchestra, along with facial acting. I went last Saturday and the experience was so good, descriptions do not do it justice. Michael Ball shines as Javert, if you fail to hear that I would recommend an ear check. Of course tickets will be expensive when its an all-star cast (Alfie Boe/John Owen Jones, Michael Ball, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Matt Lucas, Katy Secombe, Rob Houchen and Bradley Jaden being probably the people in the world with the most experience with the show.) In the past you may have been lucky to see one of two of them in the same production, but now they are all together and it is magical to behold so much talent on one stage. For anyone who has the chance, do yourself a favour and go see it, as this will never happen again. I hope with all my heart that they have recorded it.

Read on for reasons including which songs in the score work especially well We suspect your experience of this staged concert will very much depend upon how you feel about the concept of a near story-free version because, while we felt it was missing some explanation, the rest of our party was very much enjoying how well these songs were being sung. The strength in depth of the cast is astounding. Boe plays hero Jean Valjean as he is freed from prison and his strong voice is always impressive. Ball is arguably a bigger star and it is gracious of him to play Valjeans nemesis, the policeman Javert who is so unbending that he is completely undone when shown unexpected kindness. Hope Fletcher recently starred to much acclaim in the West End transfer of Heathers  and here plays doomed single mother Fantine who does justice to arguably the shows best known song I Dreamed A Dream. If it all sounds rather serious so far, bawdy baddies the Thenardiers are brought vividly to life by Matt Lucas and Katy Secombe who combine pantomime villainy and real fun in the knockabout number Master Of The House. Elsewhere, we very much enjoyed Rob Houchen in Eugenius and he makes for a charming, youthful Marius. While the powerful singing of Bradley Jaden as Enjolras caught our ears. We enjoyed the recent BBC version of Les Miserables  but there was a gaping emotional hole where the songs would have been and Boes moving  Bring Him Home is especially good here. Shan Ako as doomed lover Eponine makes the most of the tear-jerking On My Own. Its not only the impressive singing that singles out this version of Les Miserables  but also the spectacle of a cast of more than 50 accompanied by a 26-strong orchestra. Other members of our party joined the standing ovation with whoops of delight and, while this was a show we very much enjoyed, we think we would have preferred to have seen the original musical in its entirety. Adam Jacobs, the strong-voiced Broadway star who originated the title role in Aladdin, will lend his talents to a solo concert next month in Los Angeles. 3* REVIEW Les Miserables The Concert 2019 Alfie Boe… Les Miserables is one of the most heart-wrenching, moving, brilliant, immersive, perfect & brilliant three hours of entertainment. For 16 weeks this summer, Cameron MacKintosh has moved out of The Queens Theatre into the Gielgud for ‘Les Miz The Concert. …and left the heart of the show next door. Dont get me wrong, this show is beautifully lit in an X-Factor style, however, with no aging of Jean Valjean & no scenery to ‘set the scene – nearly all of the impact & punch of the show is lost. Vocally the show is driven by the magnificent Alfie Boe – incomparable and in a global league of his own. However, he struggles to rise above the imposing & oppressive orchestra who (despite offering a glorious noise) were just too loud in the mix with the vocals. I wanted to punch the sound man…. although Im sure he was simply mixing as directed. Diction was an issue too tonight at times. I found this show a mega-letdown, frustrating and disappointing. The magic of the 30+ year old gem was lost. The breathtaking original production… All of the heartbreak was drowned out by the thunderous orchestra. With tickets exceeding 200, I have to judge this like any other West End show, it just doesnt stack up. Frankly, spend 55 and go and see the UK TOUR which is magnificent. Having just seen the quite remarkable Dean Chisnall, at the soon to be Sondhiem Theatre, lead the final cast of the original production at the Queens – this show left me cold and wondering if its simply a cash cow for MacKintosh to keep his legacy alive whilst he refits the Queens to the Sondheim. Paint and carpet doesnt come cheap in London! ‘The Concert simply doesnt compare to the magnitude of the 02… alone the original anthemic and now (unbelievably) deceased production. Rob Houchen was also hugely impressive as the hearthrob Marius…originally played by Michael Ball. As for Ball, well, ouch. I dont know whether he was ill but his vocals were weak at best. Incomparable up against Boe not helped by a sound director who fades all vocals behind the band. Biggest fail of the show. It was painful to hear his destruction of Stars – brought down an entire octave to save his blushes in places. I do hope hes better soon. Hes seemingly too cute and doesnt have the venom or energy to make Javert the baddy of the piece. Crucial for the show to work. I loved Matt Lucas & Katy Secombe as the Thenardiers. Effortless and perfect. Matt has to be careful not to pull focus (hes that funny) – the audience LOVED him! Alfies breaking of character for a cheap laugh after ‘Master was unforgivable. Disastrous for the credibility of the story. Speechless theyve added this in. I truly wanted to love this but I felt nothing. Honestly, Id have rather just seen Alfie & Matt sing the hits  in concert, save time and get to the pub by 9. Great shame. Review by Alex Belfield for Celebrity Radio 11th August 2019.
